چکیده

Introduction Knowledge about genetic diversity is a prerequisite of any breeding programme. Inclusion of diverse parents in hybridisation programmes serves the purpose of combining desirable genes in new recombinations. Mahalanobi’s D statistic (7) is a powerful tool in quantifying the degree of divergence at genotypic level. Several workers have used this method to quantify the degree of divergence based on phenotypic observations in different crops . These studies have shown that accessions from the same geographical region may differ genetically as well as phenotypically and also in adaptability. In the present study, this analysis was used to determine the divergence among 81 induced mutants and 6 parental lines of grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.).

Genetic Diversity of Grasspea and Its Relative Species Revealed by SSR Markers

The study of genetic diversity between Lathyrus sativus L. and its relative species may yield fundamental insights into evolutionary history and provide options to meet the challenge of climate changes. 30 SSR loci were employed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of 283 individuals from wild and domesticated populations from Africa, Europe, Asia and ICARDA. The allele numb...

Mutagenesis as a tool for improvement of traits in grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.)

Introduction Grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is produced as major crop in Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan, and to a lesser extent in many countries of Europe, the Middle East, northern Africa, as well as in South America. It is extensively cultivated and naturalised in the Middle East countries of Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Lebanon and in Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Libya...

Analysis of genetic diversity among selected grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) genotypes using RAPD markers.

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was applied to assess the genetic variability among five selected genotypes of grasspea. Out of 30 random decamer primers tested for the present investigation 20 showed reproducible DNA amplification. A total of 257 loci were amplified of which 159 were polymorphic including 57 genotype-specific unique bands. Amplicons had molecular weights ra...

Electrophoretic phenotypes of different enzymes in some entries of Lathyrus sativus L

Introduction In Italy, grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is one of the least common grain legumes. Today, it is not included in the official statistics of Italy and its survival is due to the praiseworthy action of a small number of farmers in very limited areas of peninsular and insular centralsouthern Italy. Since the Second World War the sharp reduction in cultivation, similarly for other grain...

Evaluation of selected traits in grasspea ( Lathyrus sativus L . ) genetic resources

Introduction Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is one of the most important species of the Lathyrus genus. It has two subspecies : spp. asiaticus Zalk., which has small, coloured seeds, occurring mainly in the continental part of Asia and Africa and spp. europaeus Zalk. with large seeds, occurring predominantly in Central Europe and European Russia. According to Vavilov (8) its genetic centre is ...
